Is Armageddon drawing near?
Is the Eiffel Tower in danger? Today’s CNN website reports that French police have closed the world-famous landmark for the second time this month due to bomb threats. Tourists were standing around the tower Tuesday night when police began running crime-scene tape around its base. They were allowed to return two hours later. The earlier bomb threat on September 14 forced the evacuation of 2,000 people from nearby businesses and homes.
CNN is also reporting today that a potential “Mumbai-style” terror plot may be unfolding in Europe. Investigators believe that Osama bin Laden has signed off on the attack plan. Two years ago, 160 people were killed in Mumbai, India over three days. A man captured in Afghanistan has now warned investigators that a similar attack is being planned for Europe.
Reuters tells us this morning that intelligence agencies have already disrupted plans for multiple attacks on European cities by an al-Qaeda group. But U.S. security officials stated that the threat of a plot or plots was continuing. A former senior U.S. intelligence official recently told The Washington Times that “the threat-reporting stream today is like what we were seeing in the summer of 2001.”
At the same time, talks between Israel and Palestine continue to struggle. According to today’s Jerusalem Post, European Union Policy Chief Catherine Ashton has stated that Israel must extend its recently expired settlement construction moratorium if the peace process is to have any chance of success. Jordan’s King Abdullah, one of the most significant leaders in the Muslim world, has predicted that if these talks break down there will be war in the region within a year.
What would Jesus say about today’s news? This statement comes immediately to mind: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come” (Matthew 24:6). Some Christians see the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the Arab world as indications that Armageddon is drawing nearer; others read Revelation through a very different theological lens.
Martin Luther was convinced that the Pope was the Antichrist and Jesus would return in his lifetime. Some popular preachers predicted that the Soviet Union would stage an attack on Israel which would lead to the end of history. Jesus warned us that “no one knows about that day or hour” (Matthew 24:36). As a wise pastor once stated, “The Lord put me on the preparation committee, not the planning committee.”
Is Armageddon drawing near? I know this: we are one day closer than ever before. And we have only this day to make Jesus our King and prepare for the consummation of his Kingdom. Can you pray with John, “Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20)?
