Fortune cookie wisdom

Janet is out of town this week, so I’m cooking dinner for myself.  On Sunday night I cooked Chinese.  Actually, I drove up to the Chinese restaurant, placed my order, took it home, and ate it out of its Styrofoam to-go container.  Janet will be pleased to know that I did the dishes afterwards.

As you can see, my fortune cookie contained this piece of sage wisdom: “Wise men learn more from fools, than fools from the wise.”  Looking back, I realize that nearly every mistake I have made in my life was the result of violating that statement.  God wants me to know his will more than I want to know it.  He is adept at sending people, books, emails, etc. across my path to guide me in his word and wisdom.  His Spirit will speak directly to my spirit if I will listen.  He uses his word and world to lead me in his “good, pleasing, and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).  But he can lead only those who will follow.

When last did you learn from a fool?  From the wise?

  • We are fools when we define “being ourselves” as not changing, and therefore, not learning from mistakes! It takes painful experience to create wisdom in a human heart. When I am my wisest, I know I MUST change, because I do NOT want to repeat my past errors! Praise God that “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning!” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

  • Jim,

Can God use all “truth” for His purposes? Isn’t this a slippery slope? How do we use circumstances of “truth” to hear God?

  • I will soon begin radiation therapy following breast cancer in May. This morning I saw my radiation therapist. The doctor commented on my positive outlook. He said, “You are so nice.” I answered, “Why not?!” He said that I have been through a lot and I told him my faith is strong. He asked if I have children. I told him my only child passed away several years ago. His body shrunk down with the news. He asked what I do for a living. I said presently I take care of my husband because he has cerebral palsy. Again I could sense his spirit fall. I do not believe this doctor is a Christian. God could have prevented our problems but he chose not to. I am confident that every thing we go through in life has first been sifted through God’s Holy Hand! Why does He allow so much evil to happen? I believe like Job we are to trust in Him and give the glory to our God no matter what. The Bible says this earth is satan’s domain. We are waiting to receive our rewards on the other side of the Jordan or Heaven and not necessarily on this earth.
