What could cause you to lose your work today? Could your boss fire you? Could your family circumstances change?...Schopenhauer said that the brevity of life is the best thing about it--there's your uplifting thought for the day. Here's the good news this morning: if Jesus is your Lord, your eternal position is guaranteed. No committee can refuse to confirm you.
So you're looking for more excitement in your life? You might consider the United Nations. Today's New York Times tells us that John R. Bolton, the American ambassador to the world body, resigned yesterday. You'll remember that President Bush appointed Bolton to the position during a congressional recess, as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had refused to recommend him. His term expires at the end of this year. Mr. Bolton could be appointed to a second term, but he could not be paid for his work.
The Bush Administration chose not to engage in further conflict with the Senate on the issue, and is now looking for a candidate to replace Mr. Bolton. Send your resume to the White House--you might want to hurry.
As a second option, you could apply to be ambassador to the Moon. The Times is reporting NASA's announcement yesterday that it plans to build a permanent base on the Moon, to be started soon after astronauts return there around 2020. The base would be located on one of the lunar poles, taking advantage of near-constant sunlight for solar power generation. Humans will occupy the base permanently by 2024, so you have 18 years to get your application in order.
What could cause you to lose your work today? Could your boss fire you? Could your family circumstances change? Could your shareholders replace you? Could your health deteriorate? Not even the moon is exempt from such calamity. Schopenhauer said that the brevity of life is the best thing about it--there's your uplifting thought for the day.
Here's the good news this morning: if Jesus is your Lord, your eternal position is guaranteed. No committee can refuse to confirm you. No space agency can fire you. No economic downturn or health crisis can remove you. Jesus was adamant: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:27-28).
The One who came at Christmas chose a peasant teenager for his mother and a country carpenter for her husband. He chose grimy field hands to worship him and a feed trough for his nursery. All to prove that he chooses you today. Your past is no obstacle to his presence. Your guilt is no match for his grace.
He loves you, and likes you, and always will. Have you thanked him yet this morning?
