Tough times may come your way today, but don't think that your Father doesn't know or care. Temptations may find your mind or heart this morning, but don't think that your Father isn't watching and waiting to help.
Today the Dow Jones industrial average may set a new all-time high. The Dow rose yesterday by 29.21 points to close at 11,718.45, just shy of the record close of 11,722.98 on January 14, 2000. Economists hope that interest rates will not rise again soon, fueling the market's progress.
Meanwhile, Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria has accused his world chess championship opponent of rising too often, in this case to take bathroom breaks. According to today's New York Times article, Mr. Toparov is trailing Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, who has apparently taken more than 50 breaks in each of their games thus far.
Mr. Toparov notes that there is no surveillance in the private restrooms used by the players, presumably implying that Mr. Kramnik is consulting a computer during his frequent visits to the facility. Chess experts quoted in the article think the accusations are ridiculous. But they have given me an idea.
This Sunday I think I'll take a break during the message to consult my laptop computer for sermon notes. Perhaps you could utilize the same strategy to play Solitaire during a boring staff meeting today. I can see attorneys in the restroom checking for legal precedents during courtroom arguments, or surgeons verifying the next steps in the operation they're performing. Singers need never forget lyrics again; quarterbacks will always call the play the coach wants. If I catch anyone slipping out during the sermon this weekend, laptop in hand, I'll know what's going on.
The good news is that our Creator never needs a break from watching over his creation. We don't know what the Dow will do today, but he does. We can't see Saturday on Friday, but he can. The psalmist proclaimed, "I lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip--he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you" (Psalm 121:1-5). Right now, as you read these words.
Tough times may come your way today, but don't think that your Father doesn't know or care. Temptations may find your mind or heart this morning, but don't think that your Father isn't watching and waiting to help. All of God there is, is in this moment. The Lord of all the universe is as close as your next prayer. He never takes a break from loving you. This is the word, and the promise, of God.
